Genesis 1:27 and I quote
So God created man in his own image
This was his vision, his own picture, the right ingredients to the perfect mixture
But as time passed, the definition of man moved from its Genesis to Wikipedias revelation
“A man is an adult human male who portrays qualities of strength and sexuality”
How do you define a man?
Am I a man because of my gender? No, that makes me a male
And if that’s what you thought then I’m sorry you failed
Am I a man because I have two heads, and when I chill with girls I want to sleep with
It’s the smaller one I think with
Am I man because I’m afraid of commitment, and I don’t show emotions
So when I feel an itch of feelings, I apply my calamine lotion
And just forget…
Am I man because I went through puberty and my voice got deeper
And my 5 limbs got bigger, and in times of confrontation instead of pulling away I’d rather pull the trigger…
Am I man because I’d rather have meaningless sex with a girl and get her pregnant
Then when she asks why I said I love her I’d say I never meant it
Leaving her as a single mother or with the option of abortion
Taking a life by extortion, is this what God wanted?
Am I a man cause I’m talk dark and handsome, or ripped with a bronze tan?
Or because my jaw is chiseled and my facial features
Tell the tale of the hard times I’ve been through
Am I man because I work hard and bring back the bread
Clothe my family, make sure they’re fed
Am I man because I been through my right of passage
Or because I ignore all other females and uphold my marriage
And make my wife feel like Cinderella in her carriage
So every night she spends with me feels like a night in Paris
Am I man because women want to think like me
Little boys want to grow up to be like me
Heck even I want to be like me
Am I man because I can kick back
Smoke a blunt while listening to rap saying did he really spit that
Or because I can relax, with a Cuban, enjoying a smooth glass of Jack Daniels
And I don’t like rap but really I prefer a vintage Jazz vinyl
Boney james, ella fitzgerald, the classics…
What is a man?
See this question is more or less subjective
But we try to answer it through society’s perspective
Building stereotypes or schemas that prove ineffective
Because we think we can define a man with a checklist
Though every man develops from a boy
Not every boy develops to a man
Until a man no longer feels the need to question his manhood, he won’t know where he stands.
